The Tea Party of Florida, a registered political party that is not affiliated with any particular tea party groups, announced today that it is endorsing U.S. Rep. Connie Mack IV, R-Fort Myers, in the the U.S. Senate race in Florida.
Tea Party of Florida Chairman John Longof Celebration said he was calling for the Tea Party to unite behind Mack, whom he called the most fiscally conservative candidate in the field.
The Tea Party of Florida is a newly-registered political party, as of October, but is not claiming any members yet. Long said the party might expect thousands, who were formerly members of a previous political party called the Florida Tea Party. Long said his party must await court challenges to Florida laws that make it difficult for registered voters to switch from one political party to another.
Long said it was not affiliated with the previous group, which was founded by Doug Guetzloe of Orlando.
Mack has competition within the Republican Party from former U.S. senator George LeMieux of Lighthouse Point, former Army colonel Mike McCalister of Plant City and others. The incumbent in the race is Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.
Here’s Long’s endorsement statement:
“Connie was ‘TEA Party’ before their was a TEA Party – from his notable fiscal defections from his own Republican Leadership, in the Florida and US House, advancing the fight for smaller government, to his calls for energy independence as a matter of national security, and the Connie Mack, Penny Plan, which more than any other plan, balances the budget faster and restores our economic freedom. These are the hallmarks of the career of public service of Congressman Connie Mack. Connie Mack is a principled patriot, a conservative’s conservative and the type of leader we need and deserve in Washington.
“We plan to be very active on Connie’s behalf throughout the Republican Primary all the way through his victory in the November election. It’s time for a united front against Senator Bill Nelson’s and Barack Obama’s failed liberal experiments that threaten the very blanket of liberty that has and must always define America.”
