Maria Menounos is being Extra martyr-like with her foot and rib injuries as she competes for disco ball glory on “Dancing with the Stars.” And we’ve got the 411 (should be 911) on how the Medford homegal continues to hoof her way around the dance floor with partner Derek Hough.
“I’ve been taking care of myself and I think it’s working,” said the “Extra” hostess, who is battling a stress fracture. “I have two bone stimulators that are electrodes attached to my feet 24/7 — (contestant) Donald Driver told me they work for him, too. And Derek has his holistic-healer guy that is literally making vitamins for me with the highest calcium I can take.”
She’s also taking other vitamins and taping her foot. And even the outdoor set on “Extra” has been re-worked for Maria, who stands very little during the taping of the show and drives around the set at The Grove in a golf cart.
“I don’t walk at all except for the six hours I’m dancing — in sneakers,” she said. “So all these things are making a difference and, of course, Derek is giving me piggy back rides everywhere.”
Yes, that was quite Herculean the other night post-tango when he ran up two flights to the interview room with Maria on his back!
“He has strong legs,” laughed Menounos.
The producers are concerned that the TV hostess may have to bow out of the ABC dance contest, but Menounos refuses to give into the pain (early on in the show she broke two ribs).
“I told them, ‘I’m not pulling out,’” she said.
But Maria isn’t the only contestant receiving medical treatment. During the show on Monday night, “little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert was rushed to the hospital with a mild concussion and whiplash after she hit her head on the floor while she danced the paso doble with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. It was unclear if she would return for last night’s elimination show.
